About Us

Our History

  • Denis Kefallinos, founder of Astor
Denis Kefallinos was born on October 27, 1935, on the Greek island of Zakynthos. The youngest of 4 brothers and the son of an olive oil exporter. From a very young age Denis was a dynamic individual. His father died after World War II while Denis was only 10 years old, leaving the family to fend for themselves during very difficult economic times.

At the age of 16, without a completed education and with only a few dollars in his pocket, he would become the first member of his family to take the long journey to Canada, searching for a better life post war. He settled in Montreal with relatives and immediately began working a collection of odd jobs. His earnings went towards his living expenses and support for his family who were still in Greece. They would only join Denis a year later.
  • Denis Kefallinos working as a welder at CP rail
In 1957, he married Eugenia Moschonas and within six years they had three children. In 1960, he enrolled himself in a technical school where he learned how to weld. Upon acquiring these new skills, he soon found himself earning more money working at CP Rail as a box car welder.

After a grueling two years of work through the harsh Quebec winters and an accident that almost cost him his hand, Denis found a job as a welder in a recently started company which manufactured ventilation and stainless steel food service equipment.

During his thirteen years of employment, Denis learned every aspect of the manufacturing process. He went from welding to polishing, then to shearing and bending, eventually finding his place as a sheet metal mechanic. He designed and built very complex equipment and was also involved in the final on site installations where he dealt directly with the customers.

With all of this experience, Denis decided that he had the ability, knowledge and capacity to start his own manufacturing company. In 1975, at the age of 40 and with five thousand dollars which he borrowed from his mother-in-law in New York, he founded Astor. He derived the company name from Astoria, the area in which his mother-in-law lived, as a means to thank her.

Despite the very long hours, difficult financial situations and economic pitfalls throughout the first several years in business, Denis’ hard work and perseverance, along with the support of his family, allowed him to not only maintain the company but to expand it.
  • Denis and his two sons, Nick and Dino, entered the family business
In 1985 Denis’ son, Nick, joined the company, and in 1993 his other son, Dino, entered the family business.

Today, Nick & Dino have expanded their company and sales across North America. Over the years they have reinvested in and upgraded to the latest technology and advanced machinery, bringing them to the forefront of the custom manufacturing industry.

The two brothers run Astor with the same values and pride instilled by their father. Nick and Dino’s sons are currently involved in Astor, following the deep rooted traditions and moving the company forward to new heights as their fathers did.
